The Ministry of Culture, Sports, and Tourism (Minister: Park Yang-Woo) and the Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea (KPIPA; President: Kim Soo-Young) hosted the 2020 Korea-Indonesia Online Meeting in the COEX Conference Room in Seoul from June 29th (Mon.) to July 1st (Wed.) to reinvigorate the publishing industry struggling with restricted exports due to the recent pandemic.

The two organizations have been hosting the “Visiting Korean Book Fair” since 2015 to support the export of domestic publications. Publishers have been visiting 3 to 5 promising new overseas markets and carrying out 1:1 business meetings each year. This year, it was the third fair held in Indonesia after 2017 and 2018, but due to the recently imposed restrictions on immigration following the outbreak of COVID-19, the format was changed to an online meeting.

A total of 185 meetings were held during the 3-day event with 28 publishers from Korea including Wisdom House, Mirae N, and Hansol Education Corp., 5 publication affiliates of Kompas Gramedia Group, the biggest media company in Indonesia, and 21 prominent publishers such as the Mizan Group. Approximately 300 Korean titles were introduced, and 15 series published by Mirae N are set to sign a contract with Bhuana Ilmu Populer of Gramedia Group. Also, about 50 titles are expected to have deeper business discussions on exporting Indonesian editions.
“I am looking forward to seeing good outcomes as we could share much of what each of us is interested in through the K-book platform before sitting at the table with the Korean publisher. It was a great experience as we could expand our network with Korean publishers,” said Helena Heruningsih Driartha, head editor of M&C Indonesia.

“As a contactless work environment is further being promoted due to the pandemic, I believe that we could draw greater outcomes by saving time and money if we actively adopt online meetings for future overseas export of our publications. I hope that the online Fair this year could serve as an opportunity in which we vitalize our exchange with Indonesia, a representative country in the new Southern area, and expand the export foundation for our publications,” said an official of the KPIPA. The Publication Industry Promotion Agency of Korea (KPIPA) plans to ride the wave and continue supporting the export of competitive Korean publications by running follow-up consultations and setting up a permanent space for online meetings.
