Letters From the Exile (Changbi Publishers) by Jeong Yak-Yong, famous to Koreans as the author of Admonitions on Governing the People, is a translation by Park Seok-Moo, chairman of the Dasan Research Institute, based on letters written by Dasan (茶山) Jeong Yak-Yong, a leading practical scholar of the late Joseon Dynasty, from exile, mainly to his sons. Since its first edition in 1979, it has remained a bestseller, beloved by readers for more than 40 years. As a result of his close association with Catholicism, which was banned at the time, Jeong Yak-Yong got involved in the Catholic Persecution of 1801 and was eventually exiled to Gangjin, Jeolla-do, where he lived in banishment for over 18 years. Many men are slipshod, but few are wise and erudite in this world. Kim So-Young’s essay The World of Children is a book published by Sakyejul Publishing, with the first edition released in November 2020. The author, who used to work as a children’s book editor, later wrote this essay about children whom we both know and don’t know, based on her experiences reading books with children in a reading class. Just like the various children in this book, we have all been children at one time or another, and although our circumstances may have been different, we have all had our own struggles growing up. Looking back, children’s lives and hearts have their own joys and sorrows, as well as their own shadows. Every chapter is both interesting and touching. The chapter titled “Children’s Dignity” particularly stuck with me. It is because it is a value that I always take seriously. Yes. Dignity is important, even for children.
