South Korea's Standard Publishing Contracts and Adaptation Rights   2019.08.05   The establishment of standard contracts by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism   Following the 'Cloud Bread Incident1)' of 2014, authorities in South Korea began mulling over fundamental issues regarding the working conditions of South Korean content creators. After this incident, the culture ministry created and distributed seven standard contracts for publishing after discussions with rights holders and publishers. Up until the early 1990s, only physical bookstores of varying scale existed and readers' selection of books was based on book displays and how accessible the stores were. However, following the emergence of Amazon in 1995, online bookstores have solidified their position as key sales channels of the publishing industry in countries around the world. That change markedly took place in South Korea compared to other countries.   After online bookstores first emerged in South Korea in 1997, they grew rapidly due to book discounts, with the fixed price policy largely ignored.   Currently, the market share of online bookstores in the United States stands at 45 percent, France 20 percent, Germany 18 percent and Japan 15 percent. Korean Translator   Hyeon Jeong Lee   2024.01.02   PROFILE   Hyeon Jeong Lee (she/her) is a freelance translator based in Champaign, Illinois, USA. She studied English Literature at Seoul National University and received her PhD in English at the University at Buffalo, USA. She was awarded a translation grant from the Literature Translation Institute of Korea for her English translation of Uhye Song’s White Bird, which she co-translated with Cynthia M. Childs.
