South Korea's online platforms where readers can meet genre literature

South Korea's online platforms where readers can meet genre literature   2019.12.09   Typically genre literature refers to genre fiction, which in turn is used to call novels with similar elements or narrative styles like books of science fiction, fantasy novels, detective thrillers and mysteries. As we entered the 2010s, the market for e-books and web novels which represent digital publishing content rapidly grew and genre fiction has been shaking up the conventional literature scene ever since. In South Korea, web novels centering on genre fiction appeared in earnest in January 2013 on Naver's web novel service. What sets web novels apart from conventional novels is the fact that their formats can vary depending on the author's situation. Usually, readers have to pay for each chapter in the novel, so authors base their stories on fun and suspense. Needing to keep readers hooked, events in web novels happen quickly in short amounts of time. Also, as increasingly more user...

Exports to Southeast Asia

Exports to Southeast Asia   2018.05.30       As publication business exchanges with China have declined exorbitantly over the past 18 months, South Korea's publishing industry has turned its eye towards Southeast Asia and exports to this region have been increasing as a result. Along with efforts to make up for the gap created by declining publishing trade with China, South Korean publishers seem to have come to the conclusion they must expand their territories to move in line with today's changes. Exchanges with those in the publishing industry in Southeast Asia began around 2005 and have been continued ever since. However, one thing that stands out between then and now is the fact that Korean publishers are now creating more diverse content in a number of areas and they are also making more aggressive moves to enter the market in Southeast Asia. On top of this, the 'traveling book fair' project that has been operated by KPIPA over the past several y...

Changes in South Korea's reading demographics

Changes in South Korea's reading demographics The expansion of 'hybrid readers' and the digital age   2017.9.11   The popularity of paper books is fading while more people are reading books and text on e-books and other digital means. It is a common change that has been observed throughout the world and not just in South Korea. It is also a natural one that has come in hand with the paradigm changes as mediums of recording text have evolved. When looking at the history of mankind's communication evolution, elements like readability, preservation and economical efficiency have been key in record-keeping. Digital mediums are tools for reading that fulfill all of these. According to South Korea's most extensive survey on reading by the Korean Publishing Research Institute and the culture ministry conducted every two years, we can see 90 percent of underage students read books. However, the annual reading rate for adults above the age of 19 has steadily fallen from 86.8 percent ...

10 Keywords: South Korea's publishing industry in 2017 at a glance   2017.12.01     Candlelight Revolution   The book Candlelight Revolution with the subtitle "Winter of 2016, Spring of 2017 - History Written by Light" is a collection of 484 photographs categorized into 45 themes that captures seven key events that led to the impeachment of now-former South Korean president Park Geun-hye in May this year. It is a striking but touching panorama of images bringing together the wishes of the 17 million people who asked, "Is this a country?" while holding candlelight vigils to bring down Park’s administration.   Park, accused of graft and improper usage of power, was impeached by the candlelight revolution launched by the people and incumbent President Moon Jae-in was subsequently elected in May. It was a historical step forward, the first such event in 30 years since the declaration of democracy from a military government in 1987. While the administration was in...

Characteristics of South Korean Web Novel Platforms and Ventures Overseas

Characteristics of South Korean Web Novel Platforms and Ventures Overseas From a Community Into a Medium:South Korea's Web Novel Platforms Evolve   2017.9.11   There is a Korean phrase that goes: pearls are only good when they have been strung together. It means even if you have good resources, they will be of little good if you don't use them properly. South Korean genre literature used to be like this. There were many talented authors who could write genre literature and fans who wished to read it, even if their numbers fell short of other countries where genre literature developed far sooner than South Korea like Japan, the United States and places in Europe. However, there was not a platform for them to converge together. There were many reasons why South Korean genre literature took so long in taking off but one of the biggest was the lack of a means of communication between authors and readers. Another was the absence of a platform on which authors could make serial po...
