Korean Translator   Hyeon Jeong Lee   2024.01.02   PROFILE   Hyeon Jeong Lee (she/her) is a freelance translator based in Champaign, Illinois, USA. She studied English Literature at Seoul National University and received her PhD in English at the University at Buffalo, USA. She was awarded a translation grant from the Literature Translation Institute of Korea for her English translation of Uhye Song’s White Bird, which she co-translated with Cynthia M. Childs. Lee also co-translated Sung-hee Yoon’s short story “The Duty of Loneliness” with Childs and published it in the Tammy Journal. Currently, she is writing a Korean-American history textbook with members of the Midwest Korean School Association. South Korea's publishing market and distribution structure   2019.12.09   South Korea's publishing market can be divided into three categories: book publishing (paper media publishing), educational publishing (textbooks and educational material publishing) and internet/mobile digital publishing and production. When taken as a whole, publishing sales stood at 4.0078 trillion won in 2010 and rose 8.2 percent to 4.3388 trillion won in 2017, showing an average growth of 1.1 percent each year in between. A characteristic of South Korea's publishing market is that educational content accounts for a huge piece of it. From 2010 to 2017, educational publishing has seen an average 1.8 percent in growth while paper book sales have seen an average decline of 2.6 percent over the same period. As this sort of content increases and more forms of leisure appear, concerns over people reading fewer books are also growing. According to statistics, the reading rate of South Korean adults over the age of 19 (reading rate of paper books that are not textbooks, educational material, magazines or comic books) stood at 86.8 percent in 1994 only to plummet to 59.9 percent in 2017 (the rate was 62.3 percent when e-books were accounted for). This number can go up to double-digits for large publishing houses, while smaller publishers' number of imprints is usually in the single-digit range. Imprints are a way for publishers to expand their publishing range as well as the size of their business and improve profits. Around 2005, the number of imprints grew rapidly in South Korea, and this trend was led by Woongjin Thinkbig, which managed more than 30 imprints at one point. South Korea's Standard Publishing Contracts and Adaptation Rights   2019.08.05   The establishment of standard contracts by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism   Following the 'Cloud Bread Incident1)' of 2014, authorities in South Korea began mulling over fundamental issues regarding the working conditions of South Korean content creators. After this incident, the culture ministry created and distributed seven standard contracts for publishing after discussions with rights holders and publishers.
