K-Book in Berlin

K-Book in Berlin M&K's Monica Gu talks South Korean books   2019.09.09     It is rare for German publishers to release South Korean books.Considering this, the first exhibition for South Korean books in Germany, K-Book in Berlin embarked on a mission to spread the word about great South Korean books.     It's been three years since I came to Germany for personal reasons. As I run a publishing company in South Korea, I visit bookstores and libraries in Germany often in search of good ideas for publications. Naturally, I found myself seeking out South Korean books translated into German, and I found Han Kang's The Vegetarian (Changbi) and Jeong You-jeong's Seven Years of Darkness (Eunhaengnamu). The Literature Translation Institute of Korea played a huge role in getting these books to German readers, but usually it is rare for German publishers to publish South Korean books all on their own. The Growth of Korean Audio Books, Celebrities Attract Listeners

The Growth of Korean Audio Books, Celebrities Attract Listeners   2019.06.10   'Reading' books with your ears through audiobooks   Audiobooks are books that have little to do with paper and written words, but rather, recorded voices. When audiobooks were first introduced, they saw a surge of interest as 'useful content' that could replace paper books for those unable to easily read books in physical form, like the elderly or visually impaired. As time passed, people without disabilities have also come to appreciate the benefits that audiobooks have in the fact that you can have an audiobook playing in the background while doing something else, like driving, taking care of housework or working out at the gym. Regular consumers are drawn to audiobooks because of the fact they can multitask while reading books in their busy, modern lives.A...

Wookwan Sunim

Wookwan Sunim Introduction to Korean temple food   2019.09.09   'Where did this food come from?'Temple food refers to food cooked to capture the original taste from ingredients usually grown in Buddhist temples or found in nature. Temple food is special even in South Korea. To meet temple food is to go beyond the act of eating and think about where the ingredients came from and how the food was made. It is to realize the preciousness of food. Right now, when so many people have much interest in the preservation of humankind and protecting nature, Korean temple food is finding its place as a cultural element as it opens up a new view into food.Wookwan sunim is an expert on South Korea's temple food. It may seem strange to see the suffix 'food expert' attached to a Buddhist nun's name, but it is not that strange when you consider in Buddhism, growing food, cooking it, eating it and cleaning up is all part of asceticism. Wookwan's temple food and the stories in her food are popu...

Poetry App “Siyoil”

Poetry App “Siyoil” Publication Content Breathing Anew In A Mobile Age   2018.06.28       Poetry and mobile   Siyoil was planned and launched out of necessity for a platform on which users could read at least one poem a day, easily find poetry and share it with other users. Those in charge of the project believed poetry was a literary genre ‘made for’ mobile devices like smartphones, where aesthetic content is consumed everyday. After its launch, the application has improved consistently, tailored to the needs of its users, and more poems have been added including new works. On April 23, the app marked its first anniversary and a new section called ‘Poem Diary’ was launched where users could upload works of poetry and writing on the app like they would in a diary.
