Recent studies have revealed that health is determined by the relationship between the body and microbiomes and that, to achieve a healthy life, we must think of the body and the microbiomes as one. The term “holobiont” refers to the concept of the inseparable connection between the body and the microbiomes.
It was first introduced by American biologist Lynn Margulis. In 1991, Margulis coined the term “holobiont” and argued that all large living things should be considered as one with the microbiomes living in them.
The term can be interpreted in three ways. First, the body and microbiomes should be seen as a whole. Second, within the holobiont, the body and microbiomes interact. Third, the holobiont always communicates with its external environment. In other words, the body is an ecosystem created by the surrounding environment and microbiomes as well as a holobiont.
We must be fully aware of and work on such mutual effects in order to protect our health and delay aging. That way, we can achieve healthy aging. The questions, explanations, and conclusion in this book are all based on common sense. It suggests that we keep ourselves clean, eat sensibly, exercise, and nurture our minds.
